  • 27th June - 'Picnic on the Field'

On Saturday 27th June we held our second ‘Picnic on the Field’. We would like to say a huge thank you to BTbounce and Jammin’ Entertainments for each providing a bouncy castle free of charge for the children to play on, to those on the PTA who organised the event, to the two gentlemen who cooked the burgers and sausages, the ladies (and children) who helped with teas, coffees and cakes and to staff who came along to help. Thanks also to parents and others in the local community who came along to support the event.  The weather was kind to us (maybe a little too kind) and the children all played well in the Inter-house football and netball tournaments.

  • Netball – 3rd place Ash, 2nd place Conifer and 1st place Oak

  • Football – 3rd place Oak, 2nd place Ash and 1st place Conifer.

Kezia Wilkinson led the younger gym club members through their routine, which was followed up with displays by the older children. Many parents commented on their style and strength which was especially well achieved since their instructor, Mrs Chapman, was taken poorly at short notice. The day finished with an adult netball tournament between the School Staff, our PTA and the First Steps Pre-school. The competition was well fought by the PTA who came first but only due to a narrow goal difference between them and the School.

  • 25th June - Sports Day

Thank all of you who came along with family and friends to support and cheer on the children at Sports Day this year. The weather was kind to us (although maybe a little hot for running around!) but the children sat superbly and joined in with great enthusiasm and good sportsmanship.  We did have a couple of teething difficulties, but were pleased we were able to have the whole school out together.  Could I also thank the PTA for the ice cream and the parents who helped with the ‘catching’ of children and the handing out of rosettes.

Below is a selection of the "Peace Child" photographs.

  • 8th - 12th June - Africa Multicultural Week

Week beginning 8th June was our Multicultural week in school. This year the continent we explored was Africa.  The children spent 5 sessions during the week in mixed age groups (as before in themed weeks) working on different activities with an African theme. The sessions included  Tie-Dying and printing, Cave Paintings (petroglyphs) using sandpaper and crayons, guessing animal sounds, making Mbatata biscuits with sweet potato as the main ingredient, creating camouflage landscapes, silhouette sunset pictures over Nigeria.  On the Friday the children and Staff had the opportunity to dress up as part of the activities.

We also had an African visitor coming to talk to pupils on the Tuesday about life in Africa and an African artist visiting the school on Thursday to make African clay masks with all of the children.

We had a sponsored Bead-a-thon on the Thursday  raising money for the Wulugu Project who we supported 5 years ago. Lynne Symonds from the charity came into school on the Wednesday before to explain what the money was spent on when we last helped the charity and what their needs are now.

  • May & June Football and Netball Tournaments  - Update
  • Caston - During last term and the start of this term we have had a number of football and netball tournaments taking place at our Cluster Schools. At Caston School’s football and netball tournament  we saw Ashill School’s football team defeat every team in the Wayland cluster apart from Carbrooke. They played 5 fantastic games against some tough opposition, to lift the Caston trophy for the second year in a row. The Ashill netballers, despite a much improved performance, did not manage to finish in the top three.

  • Hockham -The football teams’ success followed on from the Hockham tournament just before Easter where the team managed to win all 5 games and bring home the Hockham trophy. Although the netballers showed much improvement did not manage to finish in the top three.

  • Saham - Due to heavy rain the night before the Saham Tournament got cancelled on 16th May and was rescheduled for 6th June.  Good weather were upon us and continued success for the Footballers with a nail biting finish on points difference, meant that they came 1st and brought the Saham Trophy back to Ashill and a very delighted and improved Netball team came 5th.

  • Ashill - THE HIGHLIGHT of the year.  On 13th June the Cluster Schools  travelled to Ashill Primary School for the last football and netball tournament of this school year.  Everyone had a fantastic time and enjoyed the great refreshments.  We some very good football with the footballer scoring maximum points, winning all 5 games, coming FIRST, bringing the trophy back to Ashill after 8 long years.  The Netballers won their first game and came a well deserved 5th place!  After a long hard day everyone was pleased with the results;  Everyone is proud of both the footballers and the netballers and hope they can do really well in the future tournaments in 2009/10.  We would like to thank all the Yr6 pupils who took part this year and wish them well for the future.

Well done once again to both the footballers and netballers for taking part and putting on an excellent performance.  A big thank you to you all; parents, grandparents, children, & staff who gave their support throughout the year and look forward to your support in the future.

  • 9th May - PTA Plant Sale

Thank you so much for all of your support on Saturday 9th with the Plant Sale.  The weather was very kind to us.  When all the money was collected and the nursery paid we made £575.85.  It was a wonderful effort! Thank you again for all your help from Hannah Colville.

  • 23rd - 27th March - Science Week

During Science week, classes 3  and 4 enjoyed a ‘Forensic Science Investigation’ morning where the  children were immersed in a  crime  scene investigation. The children   had to try to use scientific processes   to analyse evidence in order to discover who had poisoned 120 guests at a wedding!

Classes 1 and 2 have spent this half term finding out all about  Space and were visited by a mobile planetarium. The children had a wonderful time and were praised for their knowledge of the planets and space. During the afternoon sessions, children were split into groups of about 20, that included a mixture of children from Reception to Year 6. The groups then moved to a different classroom each afternoon to learn about and investigate different scientific areas. In the Acorn Mrs Goodge and Mrs Grigg were showing the children how to use chemical reactions to make honeycomb. In Class 1 Mrs Dolton and Mrs Hooper held a Marble Run challenge. The children had to create their own marble run and see how long it took the marble to go from the start to the finish. The winning group managed to make their marble run last for 25.8 seconds.

In Class 2 the children had to design a Spacecraft that would protect an

egg during its mission into space. They had to consider what materials would best protect it. The spacecrafts were then taken outside and launched. Needless to say the eggs had been hard boiled and not all survived their journey! In Class 3 the children had to design an object that would float on a variety of surfaces. These included custard, soil and jelly. In Class 4 the children were investigating sound and could be heard by all when experimenting with the drums. They used balloons, water and the computer to explore how discover how sound can be seen, felt and heard!

  •  21st March - Great Hockham Netball and Football Tournament
It's been a lot of fun! Great weather and fantastic refreshments.  Everyone is proud of both the footballers and the netballers and hope they can do really well in the oncoming tournaments. The footballers won all their games and came a well deserved 1st place.  The netballers had strong opposition and did not manage a place in the top 3 but it is said that you learn as much, or more, from difficult times as you do from the good times.  The conduct of all of the players has been very high, all year.  Well done once again to both the footballers and netballers for taking part and putting on an excellent performance. One of the great things about Ashill school is the superb help and support given by parents and volunteers and we are so grateful for the unstinting efforts in supporting their children and the teams.  Thank you all. Thank you also to Simon Dack who helps and manages the football team.

All the boys and girls should be commended on their attitude and on the sporting way they conducted themselves on all occasions.

  • 20th March -   Class 3 visit Strangers Hall

On Friday 20th March, Class 3 headed off to visit Strangers Hall to find out more about the Tudors. All of the children took part in 4 different activities which were Tudor dancing, weaving where we made a mini loom and started our own weaving, object sorting where we had to decide if objects were used for food, lighting or building and all had the chance to try on Tudor clothes. The children and adults all had a wonderful day.  “When I dressed up I looked weird and old fashioned.  Everybody looked a bit strange” said Matthew. “My favourite bit was when we did the weaving and the dancing.   We done two different dances and I liked the second one best”  said    Harriet.  “I enjoyed dressing up as a poor person from the Tudor time” said Finley.

We shared a special celebration assembly in the afternoon where all pupils and staff enjoyed a delicious red nose bun

made by Mrs Goodge and Mrs Grigg.

  • 5th March - Visiting Author, Dr Alex Cullum on World Book Day

Thursday 5th March was World Book Day and the school celebrated this with a story telling afternoon.  Stories were read to the children by staff and Class 2 were read to by a visiting author, Dr Alex Cullum.  At the end of the day, the children took part in a book swap.  Children could bring in up to 10 books (which were exchanged for tokens).  We had a huge amount of books which children enjoyed choosing from.  Dr Cullum also did some book signing of his new book, Rugly Puffs, the Bear Detective at the book swap.  Governors came in to serve refreshments.

We would like to thank all those who came along with their children / grandchildren etc to our first book swap. It was lovely to see so many of you in the school. We had a total of 372 books brought into school and children managed to exchange 301 which we think was a great success for our first attempt. If children came home with tokens, they will be able to use them at the next book swap which will be during the 2nd half of the summer term. Should you have any ideas of how we could improve this event please let us know.

  • 24th February - Pancake Day

In  the UK the Tuesday before Lent is known as Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) because it is the one day of the year when almost everyone eats a pancake.  The origins of eating pancakes arose from Christians who observe Lent and wanted to use up all the rich foods in their cupboards before Lent. During Lent eggs, sugar and butter were not allowed so these ingredients were used to make pancakes.

Today everyone at Ashill School enjoyed a pancake, some of the children asked for seconds!

Great teamwork with quick passing, made Ashill Playgroup the winners of the netball competition. The Netball team came a modest 4th on goal difference.  We wish all the Year 6 boys and girls good luck, however, the experience of this along with all their hard practice should stand them in good stead as they move on to their various High Schools.  A big thank you to you all; parents, grandparents, children, & staff who gave their support throughout the year.

  • 30th April 2008 - Meet the Author

On 30th April Class 4 went to Westfield School to listen to a talk by Steve Parker.  He told us something about the process of publishing non-fiction books, and also about his own life:  how as a child he wanted to become a zoo owner and a footballer, but has instead become the author of, so far, 250 books!  He is now getting into writing fiction and involved us in his ideas: the children were invited to invent a football team made up of animals, and decide both a name for the team and which animal would play each position.  He then listened to some of our ideas and collected in the notes we'd make.  Who knows, some of them may7 even appear in his forthcoming book!

  •      29th April 2008 - Wymondham Swimming Gala

On 29th April Year 4 children went to Wymondham College to take part in a swimming gala.  Some of us swam, others helped with the scoring.  Other local schools were also taking part.  The pool was a bit smaller than the one we're used to but even so it was scary having to start at the deep end!  The swimmers were divided into teams along with children from other schools, and not everyone was in every race.  The races included individual lengths, team relays, blowing the flying saucer (!) and some races involved using 3 different strokes.  Well done to all those who took part.

  •       19th April 2008 - Caston Netball and Football Tournament - Double Win for Ashill!!

Both Netball and Football teams came 1st and had an enjoyable time.  They played magnificently despite a very cold easterly wind. Compliments to Caston for the superb refreshments.  Congratulations to everyone taking part and putting on such an excellent performance.  The netball team looked extremely smart in their new kit sponsored by Norwich and Peterborough Building Society. They were equal on points with Caston on goals scored and goals conceded. There had to be a playoff, which Ashill won by 2 goals. With not many goals scored, the Footballers had a nail biting finish and won on goal difference. Thanks to you all; parents, grandparents, children, & staff who gave their support.

Kit joy for Ashill Netball Team.  On behalf of all of the team we would like to thank Norwich and Peterborough Building Society  for their sponsorship. We are  pleased that Norwich and Peterborough has been able to help. Netball is a great way for children to stay fit and healthy, as well as make lots of new friends.  It is great that they will be able to step out on to the pitch in style wearing their new kit.  We wish the team all the best for their matches this year.

  •   14th February 2008 - Sherbert Holmes brings home green message

The children enjoyed and picked up the message of the importance of keeping the environment clean and safe thanks to a special countywide theatre road show. The performance featured a mix of circus skills and magic tricks, which aimed to teach children the importance of cleaning up and how litter can harm people, animals and the environment.

We were delighted to be supporting the Campaign and the Lost In Litter road show. We enjoyed the show, and with characters like Butch the Bulldog the event was a great fun way for children to learn about the importance of looking after our environment.

By Paige

OOn Wednesday 17th October Class 4 went to spend the day at Great Cressingham National School where Headmistress Sally North took us back in time to experience a day at a real Victorian School.

The school was built in 1840 and the school had approximately 100 children in two classrooms in 1870. When we got there we had to line up in height order. In the playground there were metal hoops, oak skittles, spinning tops, etc. that we enjoyed playing with at playtime as well as a huge map of the Empire.    n

n

t

The girls had the opportunity to take part in needlework and we made lavender bags.  The whole day was really fun I wish we could go there again.

The children joined in with Theme Songs from, 'Swan Lake', 'James Bond', 'The Simpsons' and various other songs. They were also shown which instruments were used to make the Theme Tune for the Famous TV Show 'Countdown.'

  • 21st September 2007 - Harvest Festival

By Sophie A, Lauren, & Ryan

On Friday 21st September Class 4 performed a harvest festival assembly, the theme this year was water.  They practised very hard for 2 weeks and it turned out really good according to Class 3's Lillyella, Charlie S and Miss Wright.  Lillyella's favourite part was the poems but Charlie's and Miss Wright's favourite part was the song and dance to the music of 'Singing In The Rain.' Class 4's William S and Lydia agreed that they both enjoyed it.  William's favourite part of the play was the song as well, but Lydia's favourite part was being a narrator.

We asked Mr Haynes if he thought water was a good idea for a theme and he replied "Yes, water is essential for life and millions of people in the world don't have enough of it."  In the afternoon some of the year 6's went outside at 3:00pm and sold the produce to parents in the playground.  Altogether we made £52.62  Mrs Blaver sent the money to Water Aid to help them build a well in India.

They saw some pottery and some olden day houses and went round a museum then watched a 7 minute film.  They did activities which they said were fun.

By Benjamin, Karl and Jack

Ashill travelled to Thompson Primary School for their first football and netball tournament of the year.  They had a cracking time with the netballers coming second and the footballers coming FIRST!!  After a long hard day everyone was pleased with the results; the netballers won 3 matches and drew 2, the footballers won all their matches, by the end they had a 6 point lead against second place which was Caston.  Everyone is proud of both the footballers and the netballers and hope they can do really well in the oncoming tournaments.  Well done once again to both the footballers and netballers for taking part and putting on an excellent performance.
